Popularization of RFID food waste metering equipment in Pohang, South Korea

As part of the measures to reduce food waste, Pohang, South Korea, has placed RFID food waste metering equipment in pre-set places in more than 100 public houses; common houses that are not currently installed can be submitted to the government before the 31st Application.

The application condition is a common house of more than 100 households composed of resident representative meetings, and the actual occupants account for more than 50%. This is to ensure that the measurement equipment management staff can manage the common house by themselves after a 5-year free trial period. Or submit the application by fax.

It is reported that this device is equipped with a special food collection container with stickers, and residents can use transportation cards to pay the cost of throwing garbage. Through this RFID food waste metering equipment, food waste can be sanitaryly treated, and food waste can be reduced by more than 20%.

Pohang was selected by the Ministry of the Environment as a pilot project area in 2011 and received a budget of 1.9 billion won for the government's first introduction of food waste measurement equipment in the country. Currently, there are 1,246 RFID food waste metering devices in the city.

According to the food waste metering device announced by the Ministry of the Environment in January 2012, there are more than 80,000 food waste metering devices in more than 150 local autonomous communities across the country.
